Tender Details

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:

The works, as described, are part of the Disaster Management programme for Jan du Toit catchment.

Location of this project:

  • 12km North to Northeast Worcester, Western Cape (Lat: – 33.580785 | Long: 19.333237)

BACKGROUND AND CONTEXT:

  • The extent of the scope of works entails starting from water affairs measuring weir at the top, running down for 11 kilometres to the junction of the Bree River.
  • The upper parts of the catchment the indigenous riverine vegetation is relative undisturbed. The below catchment isolated patches of indigenous vegetation is found, but most of the vegetation has been disturbed by mechanical means or alien vegetation. Farmers periodically bulldozed the rivers in an attempt to keep the rivers free of alien vegetation and sediment islands.
  • The catchment area of the Jan du Toits is extremely steep and this gives rise to disproportionately large runoff for the area once the catchment has been saturated
  • Bulldozing has contributed to the disappearance of natural riverine vegetation such as palmiet, and this has led to the proliferation of alien vegetation. Bulldozing also caused the disturbance of the natural mixture of fine and coarse sediment particles in the riverbed and expose fine materials to removal by erosion – leading to additional issues.
  • The un-natural incision of the river into the terrain and/or the un-natural erosion of the riverbanks, as a result of sediment movement as a result of human influences, must be stopped. Please refer to the Water Research Commission publication “The development of a comprehensive manual for river rehabilitation in South Africa” for the standard for type of remediation seen as suitable removal by erosion – leading to additional issues.
